Staff Reviews

I adore debut novels and this is one of the year’s best! Groundskeeping is a love story about two people from very different worlds. Owen is the 28-year-old narrator who returns home to Kentucky from Colorado to restart his life, living in the basement of his conservative grandfather’s house. He finds a job working as a groundskeeper at a prestigious local college while taking creative writing courses on the side. Alma, the beguiling, sophisticated daughter of Bosnian Muslim refugees, grew up privileged in Washington, D.C., went to Princeton, and is the writer-in-residence at the college. As her fiction shows, she remains haunted by the Bosnian genocide. Their romance tacks back and forth — highlighting for each the ties of family, place, and class in America. Cole is a very gifted young writer — one to watch and, as Richard Russo writes, he misses exactly nothing and, “witnesses with great sympathy the painful passage between youth and adulthood.”

“Set on a small college campus, Groundskeeping follows a young man who moves home and finds himself in a covert relationship with the college’s writer-in-residence. A masterful coming-of-age debut on the messiness of writers’ lives.”
