Mother’s Day, Gardens, and Our First Anniversary

Dear Reader,

The promise of spring with warmer, sunnier days is starting to become a reality.  The store has emerged from the quiet of winter. Our shelves are fully stocked with books and more cartons arrive daily.  Sometimes we receive as many as 57 cartons each morning and boy, do we love Pete, our friendly UPS deliveryman. Our overstock (those high shelves near the ceiling) is looking… well, overstocked. Puzzles, toys, and games are already flying out of here and the pace on the floor and certainly behind the register is quickening. And we're looking for a few great booksellers to share the fun - see more information below.

The store is now open seven days a week with longer weekend hours starting Memorial Day weekend. Summer will be fast upon us — yippee for that — and we are ready!

I can think of three events to celebrate this month: Mother’s Day, the start of gardening season, and BookHampton's first anniversary.  Let’s take these in order!

A young mother recently told me how exciting and almost sweetly old-fashioned it was to volunteer at the book fair at her daughter’s school. This sparked a wonderful memory of my own mother meeting me at my elementary school — New Lincoln School in upstate   New York — to help me choose books each spring at my school’s book fair. I remember these moments as if they were yesterday. And to prove it, here is one of the books I bought with my mother at a book fair in 1957. This was sixty years ago!  (You now have a sense of how much I treasure my childhood books.) The hardcover cost $2.00 and the bookplate (given to me by my aunt who was a librarian in Essex, New York) shows in my mother’s handwriting “Spring, 1957” and in my own handwriting, my name, address, and “Book Fair at School.” How dear is this? I adored my mother and am forever grateful to her for instilling in me a love of reading and a love of books. How great, too, that book fairs have remained timeless!

Here are some books that are sure to appeal as Mother's Day gifts, plus we have a display in the store devoted to Mother’s Day. And remember, you can always call us for ideas!

While it isn’t always true that “you can’t judge a book by its cover,” in the case of gardening books, you almost can!  Here are some books filled with great, gorgeous content.

Memorial Day weekend marks our first year anniversary. And what a year to celebrate! We've met such wonderful customers and authors and have enjoyed suggesting great books, games, and gifts to you all. We look forward to many great years ahead!

Traditionally, Memorial Day weekend kicks off the summer season and we can't wait to welcome you back into the store. Befitting the occasion of our anniversary and to help us usher in another lively season, we are delighted to have New York Times bestselling author Will Schwalbe with us on Saturday, May 27th at 5:00PM.  Will’s most recent book, Books for Living, is an inspiring and magical exploration of the power of books to shape our lives in an era of constant connectivity.
We look forward to another glorious year ahead!

See you in the store!
