The internationally acclaimed and always provocative author\, Erica Jong\, whose novel FEAR OF FLYING opened the sexual door of women’s fiction\, will be the Guest Author at BookHampton on Saturday May 19th.
Ms. Jong\, whose own literary history includes some of contemporary fiction’s raciest passages\, is no wilting flower when it comes to hard-core erotica or women’s pleasure.
“The problem with SHADES OF GREY\,” Ms. Jong said\, “is that it is just bad writing. That and the fact the heroine is subservient allowing her body to be abused in order to ‘get her man.’ Is this what we’ve come to?”
“Is This What We’ve Come To” will indeed be the title of BookHampton’s Conversation with Erica Jong.
In recent years\, BookHampton celebrated Spring with Mayhem at BookHampton\, a weekend of mystery writers. This year\, according to Charline Spektor\, the stores’ co-owner\, “The greatest mystery of all is ‘what are women thinking?’
The rise of Santorum and others\, the blows to Planned Parenthood\, and the endless stream of radio-jock misogyny made the BookHampton family think that perhaps an evening of sexual-politics was once more in order.
And so BookHampton invited Erica Jong whose iconographic FEAR OF FLYING (which this year celebrates its 40th Anniversary) and most recent anthology\, SUGAR IN MY BOWL\, are offered as examples of sexy and fearless literary fun.
Ms. Jong will be talking about the difference in erotica Then (the ‘60s-70s) and Now. She plans to initiate a conversation as to whether today’s young women haven’t become afraid of heir own sexuality\; whether the safety of sex\, hasn’t robbed everyone of some spice\; and just how sex is used to grab power. And\, as promised\, she will also be discussing the merits\, or lack thereof\, of SHADES OF GREY.
